One of the most difficult things about learning English is what? Yes, reading big junks of texts especially during exam times can be very challenging as well as frustrating a lot.
Today I am going to tell you 7 things you can do to improve your reading skills and start enjoying your reading process.
1. Read the title
Any text will come with a title on top, right? Before starting to read the whole story or passage stare at the title and wonder. Ask yourself what you already know about the topic. Remember the past, present and future events in your life. Connect the dots. Then start reading it.
Bottom line: connect yourself to your reading before starting to read.
2. Look at the photo
Oh… do not forget to look at the photo and look for a connection between the text, photo and title of the passage. This will help you predict and enjoy reading at the same time.
Bottom line: realize that many things in your text should be connected.
3. Watch a movie version
If there is a movie version of the story, watch it before reading it. This will help feel relaxed and at ease because you will already know the content. Just one thing I should tell you….you might find the book version of the story more interesting than the movie because remember when you watch a movie your fantasies are switched off. When you read a book version it is all up to you how to imagine the things.
Bottom line: watching a movie may make your reading more understandable.
4. Read small size texts
If you are a beginner reader or if you have never read any books in English, start with small stories. Otherwise, I am sure you will get confused and lose your motivation to read anything till the end. Play it safe. Play it smart. Start small.
Bottom line: if you have time, start small.
5 . Read tailored books
Ouu… by the way here is another thing I should say. Put away that fat book your American or British friend gave you last week or month. I am sure you will hate both your friend and the book till you finish it. Why? …because if that book is original then probably it is written for at least advanced level readers. These books are not designed for people like you who are learning English.
Bottom line: such books will help you gain more confidence
6. Read & summarize paragraphs
It is a very good idea to read one or two pages or chapters and take a break. After the break come back and summarize the general idea of what you have just read. This way you will quickly and easily get the main idea of the text you have just read and so you will be ready to read the next page or chapter.
Bottom line: fully understand what you have just read.
7. Join reading clubs & discuss
If there are any communities clubs in your area (e.g. school, lyceum, college, university or work) where people get together to discuss the same story they have read, it would be awesome to join one of them as soon as possible. There you will discuss the story, compare your ideas and see other people’s reaction and perspective. And you will also practice your speaking skills.
Bottom line: discussing what you read will help you understand the story better.
