Before quickly moving on to the benefits let’s talk about the reasons why you don’t read a book. Our parents always complain that today we do not read books as often as they used to do when they were young. I think some of the reasons for this is that our parents’ life was simpler with simplest or no technologies, less aggressive marketing and less entertainment in their daily lives.
Today we are living in the world of high technologies, aggressive marketing and mind blowing entertainment. All of these discourage reading. Personally I would divide the reasons for not reading into two groups: visible and invisible. High technologies, an aggressive marketing, and entertainment are all visible reasons. Below let’s talk about these invisible reasons you may not notice every day.
Lack of skills
You may not like reading because you do not have enough skills to read books as fast as you want to. The main reason of not having enough skills is not reading books a lot. So what can you do? Let me provide with some quick tips here to improve your reading skills:
Another reason why you may not read a lot is distractions and by this I mean that you do not have peaceful and stable lifestyle. You live in a big family of 6-15 people and all the time your parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, neighbors call you and pull you out from your study room as soon as you want to sit down and read a book.
It happens so often that you know as soon as you start reading anything somebody will surely disturb you. So what you usually do to solve the problem? You do practically nothing. You do absolutely nothing my friend and that’s why they keep bothering you. So here what I suggest:
If you lead a fast lifestyle, you may also not have time to read a lot. This is because you are used to doing everything fast and reading is an activity which requires you to slow down at the beginning.
So if you are a type of person who likes moving extremely fast, then you might find reading as an extremely slow process but it only seems to be. Once you get to know about the story very well; once you are inside the story and once you become a part of the story then things will completely change.
You will not actually feel yourself as slowed down because from inside, the stories for you will be developing quite fast. So the bottom line is this: reading seems to be slow from outside but from inside it is not as you get into the rhythm of development of stories.
So here what I suggest:
Another reason why you may not like reading is because you don’t have a nice, comfortable and peaceful place to read. Well, you don’t have to have. If you do a little research on famous scholars and scientists of the world, you will be very much surprised to see that they actually had zero conditions to read books. Yet they read so many books that they become scholars and scientists.
A lot of people you know may tell you that you should find the most comfortable and beautiful place to read a book. I would completely disagree with that. I think when it comes to a place for reading a book, everybody’s choice is different.
Don’t intentionally choose a place to read. Just grab a book you like and start reading it wherever places you may be in. Well, except the toilets of course. Don’t try to find the most comfortable and beautiful place to read because if you are reading a book of your greatest interest you can read it practically in anywhere you like.
Again let me tell you this. Don’t’ focus on the place. Focus on your interests. Find the book which best matches with your interests and start reading.
I would sit and read there where my body, mind, and soul feel like reading.
Great ImaginationIn our last post where we talked about 5 extremely simple ways to learn and remember new words we said that reading increases your imagination. Let me talk about it more in details.
The fact that reading helps you improve your imagination, fantasy and creativity is true in my humble opinion because when you read you a book become a graphic designer, costume designer, stage designer, animator, gaffer, actor, and actress and so on.
When you read, you imagine everything as much as you like and as much as you can without any boundaries and obstacles. If you are reading a good book, you will feel that that book is written just for you. You feel that you are traveling back or forth in time. Yeah? Does it happen to you?
1. Great Vocabulary Base
Again this was also mentioned in the article “5 Extremely Simple Ways to Learn and Remember New Words” that reading helps you enrich your vocabulary base.
Yes, it does and it really does a great job. I know some people who learned English by only reading a couple of books in English because when you read, you learn a language.
You learn new words in the context. Learning new words in the context means that a new word is surrounded by other words which you know or which you are familiar with. It makes understanding the new words easier. When understanding becomes easier you become more motivated to continue reading a book. When you continue reading, you learn a lot of words, sentence structures and of course thinking in English.
Just let me share a little secret with you here. Reading a book also helps you improve your writing skills. I have been writing lots of useful articles for my blogs over the past 4 years now and I can say I have improved my writing skills mainly because of reading a lot NOT writing a lot.
2. Great Worldview
Another great benefit of reading is enriching and expanding your worldview. You don’t have to travel abroad to meet the different kinds of people of different nationalities in order to listen to what they got to say.
The book you are reading brings those people from those countries just for you. Reading a book also allows you to be in writer’s shoes and see the events from his/her perspective.
With the writer, you travel into his/her world, dive into the problems and survive as if you are experiencing everything on yourself. More you read more different characters you meet, more problems you face and more problems you solve again not using your own methods but the methods of the author.
It all adds up to your current worldview.
3. Reading Speed
More you read more experienced you become in reading. More experienced you become, faster you will begin reading. Though you don’t have to be a fast reader in order to enjoy reading.
If you insist on increasing your reading speed, read detectives or genres which really and really interest you.
For example, though I don’t read detectives I love and love reading books about famous people of both modern (e.g. Steve Jobs) and medieval times (e.g. Amir Temur, Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent) and I enjoy reading them both slowly and quickly.
So while speed is very important in reading it is not the most important. What is important is your interest.
4. Setting Example
Many of us know that children observe the elderly people around themselves. They watch and try to do what they do.
So by reading you set a good example for our own brothers and sisters that reading is a good activity. They see you reading a book, tomorrow they also want to read.
So before you ask your brothers and sisters to read a book or before even scolding them for not reading a book, read a book yourself. In other words, practice what you preach.
5. Self-discipline & Focus
Have you ever seen a person in busy and noisy places like Metro or halls sitting calmly and reading something with some great attention without paying any attention to things happening around him/her?
Yet another great benefit of reading is that it teaches you self-discipline and helps you find your focus.
If you know that you are going to read a great book then you should dedicate some specific hours every day. For some people, it is one fixed period of the day like for example morning, afternoon, evening or midnight.
For some people, there is no fixed time to read. They read whenever they have free time in order to fill in that empty, boring and useless vacuum. It usually happens when they travel from one place to another on the bus or Metro, wait for someone and etc.
Again let me tell you this. It all depends on your preferences and what works for someone else may not work for you.
Anyway whenever you try to find some time, you teach yourself some basics of self-discipline. Discipline of starting doing something new, finding, dedicating some time to finish and get the end of it to achieve the results.
Once you get used to this you start reading with great interest and that means you are getting more focused.
