Have you ever wondered why some of your friends, colleagues or people you distantly know always seem to be getting more things done in a short and/or busy period of time than you? Do you ever wonder how in the world they find time to manage to accomplish so many things? Maybe you thought they are smart, clever and have some supernatural skills? No, you are wrong.
They are not better than you. They simply use some tips, techniques and strategies that perhaps you still do not know or you know, but you do not know effective they can be. Therefore, you do not use them. In today’s post, I am going to share with you some of the tips, techniques and strategies I myself personally use and do not use yet but going to very soon.
Take them away!
1. Wear same clothes everyday
No matter how boring or conservative it may sound to you today but believe me it is actually a very cool technique to use to be more productive. Have you ever noticed that such very successful people like Mark Zuckerberg (Founder of Facebook), Steve Jobs (Co-Founder of Apple Inc.) and many others wear same clothes all the time? What …? Do they wear same clothes because they have no other clothes to wear every day? Of course, they have.
But for them even 5 minutes standing in the front of their wardrobe deciding what to wear can be as expensive as losing some sort of business deal. So wear same clothes every day and don’t waste your time deciding what to wear every single day trying to look cooler than you friends. I wear same clothes most of the time.
2. Start and finish the things you don’t enjoy first
We all have things we don’t enjoy doing and keep delaying them to the last minute. During this period we try to do those things we enjoy. But the reality is that even that favorite work will not be done perfectly because we keep thinking about those least favorite things we have to do.
So start and finish that least favorite stuff first and once you have finished you will not feel yourself sort of guilty and focus fully on the things you enjoy the most. I usually delay the work I don’t enjoy to the last minute but now I guess I have to change.
3. Do the things in several small chunks
Never say to yourself “At weekends I am free and I will finish everything in just two days” No, you will not. You think you will work super fast and think super fast but there are such things like ‘variables’. Variables it is when unexpected, unforeseen and unplanned things, over which you have no control, happen and destroy all your plans.Well, let’s suppose you want to write your essay on Sunday but then suddenly your uncle with his super active kids decides to come.
What will you do if this happens? So instead of trying to do everything on one day, divide your work into several days and do them day by day.I use this strategy to create content for our web-site and it works wonders for me. For example, on Monday I just write down the title for my new post. Then on Tuesday I brainstorm my ideas and write them all down into the Word document (I don’t care about my grammar mistakes on this stage). After that I search for awesome photos on the web to match with my post.
On Thursday, I work on my infographics or search for already created infographics on the web. On Friday and Saturday, I read everything I wrote and polish, polish, and polish. I make sure I have no grammar, spelling mistakes, extremely long and complicated sentences with some kind of smart words that simple people don’t understand.
4. Schedule and have a mental plan
If possible try to schedule your days. I have a written schedule for every day and I know what I am doing when a new day starts. This helps me to stay focused on the most important things like creating new articles, tutorials for you and so on.If I don’t have a schedule, then I will go crazy. I will always be worrying thinking what I should do next. When I am worried I cannot concentrate well. Without any good concentration, I cannot do any work at all.
5. Have a full day rest
In order to work hard and get more things done, you should also know how to rest. Your body and your mind deserve it. Let me be honest with you. Since September this year I have been working without any off-days to rest. I have been working even at the weekends. I still do.But I have been so unproductive since then as well. I was feeling myself overworked, tired and sleepy most of the time. But I will change. I realized that I need to have at least one full-day to have a complete rest. No rush! No worrying!
6. Turn off social media
If you have noticed this week I have been very active on our Facebook fan page where I have been asking questions and replying to every single comment every day. Yes, I replied to every single comment. I don’t want to say I will not do it anymore. I have already promised everyone on my Facebook page to reply to all comments. But I will be more intentional, focused and organized next week with our Facebook page.
Otherwise, I spent so much time on Facebook that I could not create any posts or tutorials by Friday. So if you have the same problem like me, be more organized with your life on Facebook, Odnoklassniki, Twitter and What’s App. If possible use only one social network that you find useful. If you use What’s App, don’t create or join groups. Otherwise oh my God you will never stop chatting and wasting your time online.Don’t use Odnoklassniki as well because there is almost nothing useful there. I have my profile page on Odnoklassniki but I never use it except sharing links in our English Club Pro group.
7. Learn how to say “No”
I know you are kind and very helpful, but sometimes people start abusing this to their own benefits. So learn how to say no in a polite manner. If you keep telling everybody “yes, yes I will do it” or “yes of course I will help you” then you will find yourself NOT doing anything for yourself.I used to say yes to everyone before and I still do, but I try to be more selective and more critical these days.
So for example, if somebody needs my help, here is what I do. I will see if it is a person who really deserves that or not because if I help I will do it with my open heart. I will see if I really have time to help.If I have time, then I will see how much time I will need to spend to help. If I have no time to help, I will see if it is urgent or non-urgent matter. If urgent, then sorry I have nothing to do with that and so I cannot help. If non-urgent, then there is no problem.
8. Write down ideas in your notepad
Most of us have smart phones these days. So download an App that helps you take notes. They can help you a lot. For example, when I create tutorials and blog posts every week, I always keep thinking about my topics I should write about. When a new idea, point or thought strikes my mind I quickly open my phone and jot all the ideas down.
I do it quickly and if I don’t, then I will lose the ideas because ideas are like birds. They come and go away quickly. So writing everything down on my phone helps me not to waste my time when I finally get down to writing. If you ever wonder how in the world I manage to find time to create content for my web-site and teach at the university full-time, this is how I do it.
9. Keep your nails short
You must be thinking “Oh this guy must be mad” No, I am not and let me prove you why. The other day as I was typing this post on my PC, I noticed that my typing was slower than usual. Luckily I realized it was because of my nails had grown up a little bit. It was really uncomfortable when my fingers where touching the keyboard. So I made them shorter and got back to typing again. It worked wonders.
10. Have a nap
I know many of us do not do this. I don’t do it. But when I occasionally have a nap in the afternoon I feel myself so refreshed, so energetic and active for the rest of my day. You know sometimes I see myself like a phone whose battery life is ending slowly and slowly. So when I have a nap, I feel like I have just been charged and ready to go. Hey if you have a luxury of having a nap, do it. I am sure you will be more refreshed and as a result you will get more things done.
11. Get married and have children
I know you may be a school, lyceum, college or university student but when one day you get married and have children, do not tell yourself “OK, I have arrived. I have no time to learn and improve myself” When I was getting married I thought I would close down my English Club web-site.
At that time, my web-site used to be englishclub.uz and I used to copy and paste a lot of posts from other famous blogs and web-sites. But when I got married it was a bomb. Everything has changed. I began creating posts all by myself and I became quite experienced in doing that. For example, take a look at this post which is more than 2,500 words.
You may think I wrote it in one hour or in one day. No! I wrote it during 3 days. So what is the connection of me running my website and getting married? When I got married and had a child I realized that I should get more organized, speed up everything and complete the tasks stage by stage, day by day. I came to know I should use my time very wisely and carefully. So as you can see getting married and having a child helped me become more focused and productive.
12. Give yourself a deadline
If you study at an international university I am sure you hate the word ‘deadline’. I hate it too. But because of deadlines a lot of work gets done across the world for your little information. So put yourself some sort of informal deadline and do your best to get the work done before that.Make sure you put the deadline yourself and not your teacher, boss and so on. I sometimes do not meet those deadlines imposed by someone else because that makes feel like I am a prisoner, you know. So do it yourself before somebody comes and does to you.
13. Know what part of the day you work best
I work best in the evening. I tried to wake up early in the mornings before but I always felt myself sleepy and wanting to go to bed and continue sleeping. On the flip side, I really and really want to become a morning person. Well, another reason why I work better in the evenings is because when my little daughter (she is now 1.5 years old) sleeps and this is the time for me to work.
When I say work, I mean creating tutorials, blog posts, researching about the topics I want to write about, plan my day, plan my Facebook posts (I mean English Club Facebook page) and so on. So I hope when my daughter starts going to the kindergarten I will be waking up early and start working from early morning. But until then I am an evening person and this is the time I work best these days.So know what part of the day is best for you to work.
14. Ignore the news
Stop watching the News channels, reading newspapers and/or listening to news radios unless something breaking or big happens. I hardly ever follow world and local news because if I am interested in what is happening in the world, then I start worrying what may happen tomorrow. For example, the other day I read news that North Korea was threatening to attack South Korea.
Man … if this really and really happens, we will all be in a big trouble. So I do not follow the politics much. They make me worry. If I worry, I will have a down mood and with a down mood and low rhythm I cannot create awesome tutorials and blog posts.I cannot do anything useful and become unproductive. So when this all happens to me, I begin feeling myself badly and only negative thoughts start surrounding me.
15. Use keyboard shortcuts
When using your PC or Mac or whatever you have out there, take some time to learn a few basic keyboard shortcuts so that you will work faster. To be honest with you I do not know any kinds of keyboard shortcuts myself but I always see my friends using shortcuts and using their devices super fast. Also when they are doing all this they look so cool. So use shortcuts. I am also going to learn a few of them and start using very soon.
16. Learn how to manage stress
Take it easy or learn how to take things easy. Bad things happen to all of us. We all have bad days – the days when we feel ourselves out of a happy mood. To make things even worse, everything we do goes wrong which drive us mad. When bad things happen I usually say to myself “Man I guess today this is not my day” and I just try to be more patient until the day ends and I go to sleep.
This is the one way I deal with my stress. Taking a shower and spending some time alone doing the stuff I love also helps me a lot. There are many ways to deal with stress, depression and anxiety. These are some of them I mostly use.
17. It is better done than perfect
We often cannot have things done because we want them to be perfect straight from the beginning. Have you ever heard of this saying “Perfectionism is a mother of procrastination”? More you want to do your job perfectly, more you are likely to not to do it because you want it to be perfect.
Hey forget about being perfect.Just do it, finish it and show it to the people and they will tell you if it is perfect or not. If it is not, you will get a real feedback from real people and based on that feedback you will make your work even better. If you look at your work with your own eyes, vision and perspective you will not see your own mistakes.
A the end of the day something which is perfect for you can be, sorry for my language, a bunch of crap for someone else.
