Today I came up with questions that almost every student asks when he or she is learning English. Take a look at the list and I hope I could answer some of your burning questions.
1. How can I improve my speaking?
The answer is very simple. You open your mouth and speak in English as much as you can. There is no other more effective and proven technique. Believe me when I started learning English I could not go beyond saying “Hello my name is Akmal” when I spoke to people in English.
Bottom line: speak English as much as you can.
2. What should I do to learn new words well?
There are a lot of ways you can try to improve your English vocabulary but for me the most effective way of learning more English words was doing a lot of practice as much as I could. When I say practice I do not only mean speaking English all the time. Practice for me is reading books, magazines, watching English movies, listening to English dialogs, lectures, presentations, songs and writing. When you do all of this you learn a lot of new words AND revise your old vocabulary when those words appear in the books, movies and lectures etc.
Bottom line: diversify your learning materials.
3. How can I learn English fast?
The fastest way of learning English is not stopping learning when you are out of your classroom. Do not just limit yourself with your English lessons at your school or college. Do not limit yourself with homework given by your teacher. Learn English 24 hours 7 days and you will soon see real results. This is the shortest way.
Bottom line: live English.
4. Should I learn American or British English?
This is a quite tricky question. But let me tell you one thing. If you are learning English using course books such as Headway, Straightforward, New English Files which are designed in Oxford University and Macmillan Publishers the chances are you are learning International English with British Accent most of the time. These two organizations and companies are UK based and most of the teachers and English language specialists they have are of British nationalities. But do not worry. Just make sure you speak and write in English clearly. If a person you talk to understands you well, then there is a little difference whether your English is American or British.
Bottom line: learn how to speak and write clearly.
5. What should I do to get higher IELTS score?
What should you do! You should improve your English. There is no secret ingredient here. When I say learn English remember that I want to say you should learn and practice your English at the same time. For example, do not only learn grammar or speaking or vocabulary every day. Learn everything because IELTS will test your speaking, writing, reading and listening skills. I had a student whose English was a strong Intermediate level and he got IELTS 6.5 easily when he took the test. A secret of his success is hard work. He just worked hard to improve his English language skills overall.
Bottom line: first you must have strong general English.
6. What books should I use to learn English?
Well, it depends on what you would like to learn. If you want to improve your grammar, speaking, writing, reading, listening and vocabulary skills, at the moment of writing this post I can only recommend you Headway 4th edition from the Oxford University. But again the point is not what book you use to learn English. It is what you do with this book. You can have the best book in the world but if you do nothing with it then it is useless that you have it. One more thing … do not limit yourself with only books because you may get bored very soon and give up learning English. Use varieties of materials available today – Youtube channels, websites, blogs, iTunes podcasts, English movies and songs.
Bottom line: course books are good but there even more exciting materials online.
