I created this blog post because I see so many students take IELTS exams at the British Council in Tashkent and feel disappointed at the end. That’s why I came up with 3 top reasons why you may not get what you want from IELTS. Now I am not saying all of these 3 reasons will be true for you.
Even if at least one of them is true, that can be the reason why you are always getting a low score. Take a look at them and I hope you will stop making those mistakes and finally and finally get high IELTS score. Hey smile!
1. You neglect general English
You don’t know how to connect two words together but you want to pass IELTS. Is that right? You know your English is Elementary but still you think that a miracle can happen to you and you will miraculously pass the exam and get IELTS 7 or even higher. Let me tell you this? If your English is Elementary, Pre-Intermediate or even Intermediate, forget about IELTS. OK? Forget about it?
For the God’s sake I am begging you …. please focus on your general English. For the God’s sake please, please and please improve your pronunciation, vocabulary, writing, listening and reading skills. You know what? Just enjoy learning the language. Be happy when you pronounce the words like a native speaker would.
Read more books and discover a bigger world. Widen your worldview. Forget about IELTS. Forget. You know there is a famous English proverb. Take care of pennies and pounds will take of themselves. So take care of your general English and IELTS will take care itself. That means learn English really well and IELTS won’t be a problem at all.
2. You learn everything by heart
I was shocked when I heard that some students learn all those IELTS essays and speaking sample answers by heart. What a stupid way of preparing for IELTS! If you don’t know how to write essays and if you don’t know how to speak then how in the world you want to study at a university where the language of teaching is English?
What is the point of paying so much money to study at prestigious international university in your country or abroad if you are not willing to learn? What is the point?
So stop learning Writing essays and Speaking answers by heart. Start learning the real language. Learn how to write essays on almost any topic. Learn how to rule out speaking exam questions and answer them properly.
Let me tell you this. I have never and ever passed IELTS myself but with full confidence I can tell you that I can write essays and not only essays but anything I want really well. And I can speak really well … much and much better than those folks who may have IELTS 7, 7.5 or 8.
3. You work with a student
Don’t get pissed off. OK? Don’t get pissed off. Just because your so-called “teacher” studies at Westminster International University in Tashkent, Management Development Institute of Singapore or other international universities don’t be so naive to think that tomorrow you will also get IELTS 7.5 just like him or her.
If he/she (your “teacher”) got IELTS 7 or 7.5 chances are that he or she has learnt English really well either at school from an early age. Or later on he/she worked with a good private tutor who was not a student but a real pedagogue with proper qualifications, decent work experience and praiseworthy student-success records.
Don’t be naive, cheap and illusioned that a university student with a decent IELTS score can get you high IELTS score easily. He/she can advise you on how to pass IELTS but not teach you something because teaching one person one little thing is not an easy job. It is not something like “Hey come on let’s have a cup of tea and learn this”. There is whole psychology involved in the proccess.
Prepare for IELTS yourself and use those students only to guide you. Or work with a private tutor who has a great student-success records if you can afford. Or sign up for IELTS courses at good language centers in your city.
