Oftentimes I meet people who want to learn English super fast and they always look for shortcuts in order to achieve their goals. And that’s really stupid because if you really want to achieve a good level of English you have to have 3 things:
You need desire and it comes when you know why you learn English. Why… When you have the answer to that ‘why’, then you will see that when tasks your teacher gives become difficult and challenging you will still stay strong. You will not give up that easily and continue working harder and harder.
You need action because without taking real action you can’t achieve anything. And you should not be afraid of taking action because it is always hard, painful and stressful at the begining. Make your sure you attend all your lessons, actively participate in the lessons and do your homework on timely manner and as the time goes by you will see you are doing great.
Now let’s get down to business. And I want to tell you 3 things people tell you when you want to learn or when you are already learning English. They are so frustrating because when you dedicate time, have a strong desire to learn and already work hard they just kill your spirit and make you lazy.
So let’s go and be careful!
1. You don’t need to learn any grammar
That’s the most stupid thing you may ever hear from people. Oftentimes you hear such things from those folks who travelled to the USA and act like they are fancy now. They lived in New York for sometime and saw how Americans don’t really care about grammar and in fact they just speak breaking every single grammar rule your teacher taught you at school. Then they think grammar is just a waste of time and energy.
Grammar isn’t waste of time at all. Well,… let me explain that to you. Yes, people always tell you that if you live in the USA, UK or any other English speaking country you will quickly, easily and effortlessly learn English. That’s true. Very true.
But then you will be no different from those people who never went to school and always lived their life selling hamburgers in McDonalds, driving taxi or washing dishes in the restaurants. You know what? These people also know English.
Do you want to be one of them OR do you want to be well-read, educated and intelligent person who knows English grammar and almost never makes mistakes when …
2. You can learn English in 2-3 months
Yes, you can learn but very and very basics of English only. Anyone who says he/she can teach you English and you will speak fluently is lying to you. Don’t listen to him/her at all. Don’t be so naive. People spend years to master their English and how in the world you can learn it in just 2-3 months? How?
I spent about 10 years to learn English. I am not kidding. And I still learn every day. Everytime I change my coursebooks to teach English, no matter what level it maybe, there is always something I don’t know. Always. It is quite normal if you don’t know. Not normal when you don’t learn that what you don’t know.
So don’t listen to such people. Otherwise, you will lose your working mood, spirit and motivation. Keep up the good job and keep going. Ah by the way no matter how fast or slow you are learning, just make sure you don’t stop. This is very important. Just keep going.
Take your time. Learn the language properly.
3. You should only learn how to speak
WOW, yes you should only learn how to speak because you only want to drive New York taxi, sell McDonald’s hamburgers and wash dishes in the restaurants for all your life, right? Am I right? No … if no… learn all the skills possible.
Improve your writing, listening, reading, speaking and vocabulary. You will need writing when you enter a university because you will have to write coursework, diplomawork, e-mails to arrange meetings with your supervisor.
When you graduate from the university you will need it in your business correspondence and so on.
Listening and reading, I guess, is clear why you need them. Let me tell you about speaking. When I say you need to improve your speaking skills I don’t mean that you should open your mouth and start speaking English.
You should learn how to pronounce the words correctly, speak without your Uzbek or Russian accent and structure your speech as well as pick the rights words depending on who you are speaking to.
Remember those who tell you that you should only learn how to speak English have no idea about things I wrote above. No idea …
